I love doing this whenever I get the chance, because you are able to see the city from a much different perspective than from the streets. There are no buildings in the way. There are no people in the way of your photos. You get to see the entire city, from a perspective that no road or sidewalk can give you.
When you go onto a boat, it depends on what boat you take. New York Water Taxi's and the Staten Island Ferry are purely for transportation, with some minimal views of the skyline available. Liberty Cruises are purely for going from the Clinton Battery in Battery Park, to the Statue of Liberty, and then Ellis Island, back to Battery Park. What you would most likely want to take, is the Zephyr tours of New York City.
What they do is they normally take off from the South Street Seaport, and then they go from there up the East River a bit, under the Brooklyn Bridge, and then barely past Lower Manhattan, usually right neat the Manhattan Bridge, to show you the skyline of upper Brooklyn, and Midtown Manhattan. Then it takes you back near Governor's Island, down past the Battery, past the World Trade Center, and then goes down the Hudson River a piece, almost to be in line with the Empire State Building.
It then pops a U-Turn, near Chelsea Piers, and comes back very close to the Statue of Liberty, usually playing some patriotic music, and slowing down, allowing for picture taking. Then it comes back towards Lower Manhattan, and then the tour is over.
I love doing this whenever I get the chance, sometimes during the day, but I would highly recommend, sitting on the outside of the boat, and go at night, to see the city, in all its true glory, all lit up. Going during the day, or evening is cool too, especially during a crystal-clear blue sky day. I love taking a boat ride around the city on these days especially.
I hope that you all can one day go do this amazing touristy attraction, and all enjoy it like I do!
Have you ever done something like the Zephyr tours around the city? Would you ever want to do a tour like this? Do you agree that you get great views from this type of tour?
