I wanted to do the solo as soon as I heard about it, in January of fourth grade. My music teacher asked anyone if they wanted the solo, no one rose their hand for about five minutes, so I rose mine, and got it. I was made fun of a lot, as I would practice it in the weeks leading up to the May Spring Fling. I was so discouraged that I almost didn't want to do it anymore. But my Music teacher told me to stay determined, and I did.
So the night came about, and I was dressed up as Ricky Ricardo, from the show. The whole theme of our Melody was 50's and 60's shows. There were songs like Green Acres, Mr. Ed, and Bonanza. Right after Bonanza was my solo. I walked up to the mic. I was so nervous, but as soon as I was about to start singing, all the fears went away. I sang the quick 40 second solo, got a few claps, and went back to my spot on the stage. I was so happy that I did the solo good.
This was the solo I had to sing:
"I Love Lucy, and she loves me. We're as happy as two can be. Sometimes we quarrel but then. How we love making up again. Lucy kisses like no one can. She's my misses, and I'm her man. And Life is heaven you see. Cause I Love Lucy, I Love Lucy, and Lucy loves me!"
A three years later, because of this experience, I tried out for the first play in my old school in years. It was 'Don't Say No To The U.S.O.' I got a lead part, and then the next year, I was Gaston in 'Beauty and the Beast'. Because of these two things, I was told to try out for the chorus at Kellenberg. I did, and because of that it opened so many doors for me in Kellenberg, and thus gave me the solo everyone now knows about, and thus gave me the name for this blog!
The reason I show this progression, is because I had this solo, it got me going on a very long and fun journey in my life. So thats my first ever solo, and I wouldn't change it for the world!
Did you ever have a solo for your schools Spring Fling? Would you have been nervous like me, or calm?
Peace and Love,
DGS
